Window Safety and Fall Prevention Tips, Part 2
The Window Safety Task Force offers these tips to protect children from window falls:
- Never paint or nail a window shut. You must be able to open them to escape in an emergency.
- Do not install A/C units in windows that may be needed for escape or rescue. Always have at least one window in each sleeping and living area that meets requirements for escape and rescue.
- Consider installing window fall prevention devices or guards as a fall prevention measure.
- Install double-hung windows on second stories. The upper sash can be opened for ventilation while leaving the lower sash closed.
- Some homes may have guards, bars, grilles or grates already covering their windows. Those windows are useless for emergency escape and rescue without appropriate release mechanisms; update them to include releases.
- Determine your family's emergency escape plan and practice it often. Include a safe meeting place outside. Children may have to rely on a window to escape in an emergency. Help them learn to safely use a window to escape.
