Day 4, April 8
Window Safety and Fall Prevention Tips, Part 2

The Window Safety Task Force offers these tips to protect children from window falls:
  • Never paint or nail a window shut. You must be able to open them to escape in an emergency.
  • Do not install A/C units in windows that may be needed for escape or rescue. Always have at least one window in each sleeping and living area that meets requirements for escape and rescue.
  • Consider installing window fall prevention devices or guards as a fall prevention measure.
  • Install double-hung windows on second stories.  The upper sash can be opened for ventilation while leaving the lower sash closed.
  • Some homes may have guards, bars, grilles or grates already covering their windows. Those windows are useless for emergency escape and rescue without appropriate release mechanisms; update them to include releases.
  • Determine your family's emergency escape plan and practice it often. Include a safe meeting place outside.  Children may have to rely on a window to escape in an emergency. Help them learn to safely use a window to escape.

Day 3, April 7
Window Safety and Fall Prevention Tips, Part 1

The Window Safety Task Force offers these tips to protect children from window falls:
  • Keep children's play away from windows or patio doors. Falling through an insect screen, open window or glass can be fatal or cause serious injury.
  • Keep furniture - or anything children can climb - away from windows. Children may use such objects to climb to an open window and potentially fall.
  • Keep your windows closed and locked when young children are present. When opening windows for ventilation, open windows that a child cannot reach.
  • The degree of injury sustained from a window fall can be affected by the surface on which the victim falls. Plant shrubs and soft edging like grass or wood chips beneath windows to potentially lessen the impact if a fall does occur.

Falls happen in a moment

Day 2, April 6
Each year, the Window Safety Task Force takes the first full week in April to educate about the importance of practicing window safety year-round.

Falls from a window can result in serious injury or death and pose an especially dangerous threat for children. Every year, about eight children under age five die from falling out a window, and more than 3,300 are injured seriously enough to go to the hospital.

“It only takes seconds for a preventable window fall to occur,” said Becky Turpin, director of Home & Community Safety for the National Safety Council. “To avoid these needless tragedies, it is very important for parents and caregivers to take steps to prevent home falls.”

Window safety week starts today!

Day 1
Windows are one of the few things we enjoy both inside and outside our homes and businesses.  They serve an important role in our lives by letting in natural light and fresh air when open, and by keeping out the elements when they’re closed.  Certain larger windows can even take on an even greater role if we need to escape or let emergency personnel in.

The goal of Window Safety Week is to encourage parents and caregivers to take steps to observe window safety throughout the year.  Responsible adults are the key to window safety when children are present.

Congratulation to Matt Brasby and his retirement from Brasby Construction!

On Friday, January 9, friends, family, and coworkers gathered for a surprise retirement party for Matt. Kathy, his wife, told him that she was taking him out for dinner, but they had to stop by the church first. Inside waited the party with party guests and supper ready to go.

During the company Christmas Party, Matt shared facts related to his 35 year career for a fun game of trivia.

Matt started Brasby Construction in 1977 and has worked hard to build the company. Since its creation, Matt has installed 5,702,400 grain bin bolts, 129,600 grain bin sheets, for a total grain storage capacity of 29,551,200 bushels.

Brasby Construction will continue under the new management of Nathan Brasby, Matt’s oldest son.

Lead-Based Paint & Peace of Mind

3/2/2015

Since 2010 the EPA has required all contractors who may disturb lead-based paint to become certified renovators. This involves taking an 8-hr class and doing some hands-on specialized activities.  One of the activities we did was learning how to test for lead-based paint.

Lead-based paint was only produced until 1978.  If your home was built prior to or around this time the paint in and on your home may contain lead.  Lead based paint is only dangerous when it is disturbed, so if you are planning a painting or remodeling project that can disturb some old paint, you should have it tested.

This is a simple test that even homeowners can do on their own. Lead tests are available just about anywhere you can buy paint. Testing for lead involves exposing all layers of paint or stain by cutting a small v into the material being tested.

Then a chemical compound is applied to the exposed paint and within 30 seconds will change color if lead is present.  There are 2 basic kinds of lead tests.  One uses a tube and swab, the other is a cloth that needs activated by water.  Here are some examples of what the cloth tests look like.

If you are doing a lead test and discover that lead is present, here are some things you should know.  Lead poisoning usually happens through hand-to-mouth activities.  Doing a test does disturb a little bit of the lead-based paint, so use some caution and clean up carefully after the test.  Baby wipes work really well at capturing the dust on windowsills and can just be thrown away to keep the lead contained and keep your family safe.  After doing a lead test, wash your hands especially before eating, drinking or smoking. If you did discover lead, hire a contractor who has been trained on how to contain lead during renovation.
